Cantus and Sweet Honey in the Rock in Concert!
September 21, 2017 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm$30 – $75
Sweet Honey In The Rock® is a performance ensemble rooted in African American history and culture. The ensemble educates, entertains and empowers its audience and community through the dynamic vehicles of a cappella singing and American Sign Language interpretation for the Deaf and hearing impaired. As artists, activists, and humanitarians, Sweet Honey In The Rock® has, for forty years, raised her voice to advocate for truth, justice and compassion while addressing the critical issues of democracy, freedom, racism, and economic and social justice. Sweet Honey has also proactively advocated for accessibility and disability rights for the differently abled, and has welcomed the Deaf and hearing impaired by including a Sign Language interpreter in the ensemble.
The “intellectually, emotionally and musically rich” (Star Tribune) eight-member men’s vocal ensemble Cantus is known worldwide for its trademark warmth and blend and its engaging performances of music ranging from the Renaissance to the 21st century. Working without a conductor, the members of Cantus rehearse and perform as chamber musicians, each contributing to the entirety of the artistic process. The Washington Post hails the ensemble’s sound as having both “exalting finesse” and “expressive power” and refers to their music-making as “spontaneous grace.” Cantus performs more than 60 concerts each year both in national and international touring, as well as in its home of Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota and has released 17 albums on its own self-titled label.
Inspired by Sweet Honey's mission and programmatic approach, Cantus has performed their much-loved classics – such as “Wanting Memories” – for years. But the two ensembles have never shared the stage until now. Cantus and Sweet Honey will present selections of their own before coming together for a dynamic finale.
