American Sign Language Day at the Minnesota Zoo
April 18 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
The Minnesota Zoo is excited to celebrate American Sign Language Day on Thursday, April 18. Since 2012, the Zoo has invited middle and high school language students studying American Sign Language (ASL) to present on zoo animals. This allows students to practice and use their ASL skills in a fun and social setting. Presentations are interactive and will be on public display for all zoo guests to enjoy. Students are encouraged to use costumes, props, and skits to creatively teach about animals while using sign language.
ASL interpreters from St. Catherine’s University will also be on hand to assist interpreting daily zoo activities.
ASL Day Interpreted Zoo Activities Include:
- Penguin Feeding – 10 am
- Close Encounters Creature Feature – 10:30 am
- Tropical Reef Dive Show – 10:30 am
- Cow Milking Demonstration – 11 am
- Mission Possible: Saving Wildlife presentation – 12 pm
Student presentations take place from 9 am – noon along the Tropics Trail, Minnesota Trail, Penguin Hallway, and Discovery Bay. The entire community is encouraged to visit the Minnesota Zoo on ASL Day and partake in this language celebration.
